 1) Frank Leslie Thompson, Pseudonym Furnley Maurice ['fəːnlɪ 'mɔrɪs], australischer Schriftsteller, * Melbourne 6. 4. 1881, ✝ ebenda 22. 2. 1942; war Buchhändler und Verleger. In seinen kritischen Essays (»Romance«, 1922) tritt er für »Natürlichkeit« als Alternative zu tradierten poetischen Konventionen ein. In seinen Gedichten spiegelt sich sein Engagement für die nationale und kulturelle Eigenständigkeit Australiens; unter dem Eindruck des Ersten Weltkrieges entstand dezidiert pazifistische Lyrik (»Eyes of vigilance«, 1920). Sozialreformer. Bestrebungen charakterisieren sein Werk ebenso wie schneidender Sarkasmus, umgangssprachliche Elemente und die Darstellung der Alltagsrealität, so in den formal experimentierfreudigen »Melbourne odes« (1934).
